Raspberries (Rubus idaeus)

Raspberries are beloved perennial shrubs that produce delicate, hollow fruits with a signature sweet-tart flavor. They are highly nutritious, packed with antioxidants, fiber, and Vitamin C. Whether you choose the classic red, golden, or even purple varieties, raspberries are a rewarding addition to any garden, providing a steady harvest for fresh eating, freezing, and preserves.

Companion Planting:

Raspberries grow well near garlic, chives, and nasturtiums, which help repel aphids and beetles. Planting clover as a ground cover nearby can fix nitrogen in the soil and attract pollinators. Avoid planting them near potatoes, tomatoes, or blackberries, as they can share soil-borne diseases like verticillium wilt or various viral infections.

Care Tips:

  • Planting: Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like grey mold.

  • Watering: Provide regular, deep watering at the base of the plant, especially during flowering and fruit development. Avoid overhead watering to keep the delicate berries dry.

  • Support: Most raspberries benefit from a post-and-wire trellis system to keep the tall canes upright and make harvesting much easier.

  • Harvesting: Harvest when the berries are fully colored and pull away easily from the central core (leaving the berry hollow). They are best picked in the morning when it’s cool and handled gently, as they are very fragile.

Fun Fact: Unlike many other fruits, raspberries do not continue to ripen after they are picked—so make sure they are perfectly ripe before you harvest them!
