Poppy (Papaver sp.)

Poppies are iconic, enchanting flowers known for their delicate, paper-thin petals and striking seed pods. Whether they are the classic red field poppies or the large, ruffled Oriental varieties, they add a sense of ephemeral beauty to any landscape. They are a favorite for bees and bring a wild, natural feel to garden borders.

Companion Planting:

Poppies look stunning when planted among cornflowers, ox-eye daisies, and ornamental grasses. They also grow well near carrots and parsnips in a vegetable patch, as their deep taproots can help loosen the soil without competing for surface space. Avoid planting them in overly crowded or shaded spots, as they need good air circulation and plenty of light.

Care Tips:

  • Planting: Most poppies prefer to be sown directly where they are to bloom, as they have sensitive taproots and do not like being moved. Sow in well-drained soil in full sun.

  • Watering: Water regularly during dry spells until they start flowering. Once established, most annual poppies are quite drought-tolerant.

  • Support: Taller varieties, such as Oriental poppies, may need a wire support or “floping” ring to prevent the heavy blooms from bending to the ground.

  • Harvesting: For cut flowers, sear the ends of the stems with a flame or boiling water immediately after cutting to stop the milky sap from leaking. Let the seed pods dry on the plant if you wish to collect seeds for next year.

Fun Fact: The seeds of the Papaver somniferum variety are the very same poppy seeds used in baking for muffins, bagels, and traditional cakes!
