Lilacs (Syringa)

Lilacs are beloved deciduous shrubs celebrated for their intense, sweet fragrance and elegant clusters of blooms (panicles) that herald the arrival of late spring. Available in shades of purple, white, pink, and deep magenta, they are a nostalgic staple of northern gardens. Beyond their beauty, they are incredibly hardy and can live for decades, often outlasting the gardeners who planted them.

Companion Planting:

Lilacs grow beautifully near peonies, irises, and daylilies, as they often bloom in succession or together, creating a classic spring display. Planting alliums or mint nearby can help deter common pests like borers. Avoid planting them too close to large, thirsty trees like maples, which can compete for the nutrients and moisture lilacs need to produce heavy blooms.

Care Tips:

• Planting: Choose a spot with full sun (at least 6 hours a day) and neutral to slightly alkaline, well-drained soil. Good air circulation is key to preventing powdery mildew, a common foliar issue for lilacs.

• Watering: Provide regular water during the first few years and during dry spells. Once established, they are quite drought-tolerant but appreciate a deep soak during hot summers.

• Support: No support is needed. Lilacs grow into sturdy, woody shrubs. Some taller, older varieties can be pruned into a “koks” form with a single trunk.

• Harvesting: For the best cut flowers, harvest when the individual florets in a cluster are about half-open. To ensure a great display next year, “deadhead” (remove) the spent flower clusters immediately after they fade.

Fun Fact: Lilacs belong to the Olive family (Oleaceae), making them distant cousins of both olive trees and jasmine!
