Hollyhock (Alcea rosea)

Hollyhocks are iconic, towering biennials or short-lived perennials that define the classic cottage garden look. Known for their majestic flower spikes that can reach over two meters in height, they produce a profusion of large, satiny blooms in shades of white, pink, yellow, and deep maroon. They are a favorite for bees and butterflies, providing a vertical drama that few other flowers can match.

Companion Planting:

Hollyhocks grow beautifully as a backdrop for lavender, daisies, and coneflowers. They also pair well with sunflowers, as both share a love for full sun and vertical space. Avoid planting them in tightly packed, damp corners with poor air circulation, as they are highly susceptible to “rust” (a common fungal disease that affects the leaves).

Care Tips:

• Planting: Sow seeds in a sunny, sheltered spot with rich, well-drained soil. They often self-seed, meaning new plants will likely appear in the same area year after year.

• Watering: Water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry, which helps prevent fungal issues. They need regular moisture, especially during the heat of summer when they are in full bloom.

• Support: Due to their extreme height, hollyhocks almost always require staking or should be planted against a fence or wall to prevent them from toppling over in strong winds.

• Harvesting: While mainly grown for display, the flowers are edible and can be used as a colorful garnish. Remove spent flower spikes if you want to prevent heavy self-seeding.

Fun Fact: In the Victorian era, hollyhocks were often planted near outhouses (outside toilets) because their extreme height helped hide the buildings from view!
