Garden Radish (Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. sativus)

Garden radishes are fast-growing, cool-season root vegetables prized for their crunchy texture and peppery bite. They are among the easiest and quickest crops to grow, often reaching maturity in as little as three to four weeks. Rich in Vitamin C and potassium, they are a refreshing addition to salads and a favorite for beginner gardeners.

Companion Planting:

Radishes grow exceptionally well near lettuce, spinach, and carrots. They are often used as “marker plants” because they germinate so quickly, showing where slower seeds are planted. They can also help deter certain pests from cucumbers and squash. Avoid planting them near hyssop, which can negatively affect their growth.

Care Tips:

• Planting: Sow seeds in early spring or late summer, as they prefer cooler temperatures. They need loose, well-drained soil to develop smooth, round roots.

• Watering: Provide frequent, light watering to keep the soil consistently moist. Uneven watering can cause the roots to crack or become overly woody and spicy.

• Support: No support is needed for radishes, as they grow underground with a low leaf rosette.

• Harvesting: Harvest as soon as the roots reach the desired size (usually about 2.5 cm in diameter). If left in the ground too long, they become “pithy” (spongy) and lose their flavor.

Fun Fact: Because they grow so rapidly, radishes were historically used as a “catch crop”—planted in the spaces between slower-growing vegetables to maximize garden space!
