Garden Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus)

Garden cosmos are cheerful, sun-loving annuals known for their feathery, fern-like foliage and daisy-like blooms. They are incredibly easy to grow and are a staple in cottage gardens due to their height and airy appearance. Available in shades of pink, white, and maroon, they are excellent for cutting and attract a wide variety of beneficial insects.

Companion Planting:

Cosmos grow beautifully near tomatoes and peppers. Their abundance of nectar attracts hoverflies and parasitic wasps, which act as natural pest controllers for your vegetables. They also pair well with other sun-loving flowers like zinnias and marigolds. Avoid planting them in overly fertilized soil, as too much nitrogen will result in lush green foliage but very few flowers.

Care Tips:

• Planting: Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last frost. They prefer full sun and can tolerate poor, dry soil where other flowers might struggle.

• Watering: Water regularly until established, but once mature, they are quite drought-tolerant. Avoid over-watering to prevent root issues.

• Support: Taller varieties (which can reach over 1 meter) may require staking or a “Chelsea chop” (pruning) early in the season to encourage a bushier, sturdier habit.

• Harvesting: Deadhead spent blooms regularly to keep the plant producing new flowers all summer long. They make excellent long-lasting cut flowers for bouquets.
