Daylilies (Hemerocallis)

Daylilies are vibrant, clump-forming perennials known for their showy, trumpet-shaped blooms. As their name suggests, each individual flower typically lasts for only one day, but since a mature plant produces numerous buds on tall stalks (scapes), the flowering period can last for several weeks. They are incredibly hardy, heat-tolerant, and available in nearly every color of the rainbow.

Companion Planting:

Daylilies grow beautifully alongside coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and ornamental grasses. Their dense, grass-like foliage is excellent for suppressing weeds and acts as a wonderful “filler” between earlier-blooming bulbs like daffodils or tulips. Avoid planting them in deep shade or near highly aggressive groundcovers that might compete for nutrients in the root zone.

Care Tips:

• Planting: Augs in full sun for the most abundant blooms, though they can tolerate partial shade (especially in hotter climates). They prefer well-drained soil but are very adaptable to clay or sandy conditions.

• Watering: Provide regular water during the first growing season. Once established, daylilies are remarkably drought-tolerant, though they bloom better with consistent moisture.

• Support: Most daylily varieties have sturdy stalks that do not require staking. However, very tall heritage varieties may occasionally need support in high-wind areas.

• Harvesting: While mainly grown for display, daylily buds and petals are actually edible and used in various cuisines. For the best garden appearance, “deadhead” (remove) withered blooms daily to keep the plant looking tidy.

Fun Fact: Despite their name and appearance, daylilies are not “true lilies” (which grow from bulbs); they grow from thickened, tuberous roots, which is why they are so much harder to kill!
