Honeyberry (Lonicera edulis)

Honeyberries, also known as Haskaps, are incredibly hardy, deciduous shrubs that produce unique, elongated blue berries. Their flavor is a delightful blend of blueberry, raspberry, and blackcurrant. Because they can survive extreme winter temperatures (down to -40°C), they are a favorite for northern gardeners. They are exceptionally high in antioxidants and Vitamin C.

Companion Planting:

Honeyberries grow well near blueberries and currants, as they share similar space requirements, though honeyberries are much less picky about soil acidity. Planting clover or wildflowers nearby is beneficial to attract early-season pollinators like bumblebees, which are essential for fruit set. Avoid planting them near tall, aggressive trees that might shade them out, as they need light to produce sweet fruit.

Important Note: You usually need to plant two different varieties near each other for cross-pollination to ensure a good harvest of berries.

Care Tips:

• Planting: Plant in full sun for the sweetest berries, though they can tolerate partial shade. They prefer moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

• Watering: Provide regular watering, especially during the first two years of establishment and while the fruit is developing in late spring.

• Support: No support is needed. Honeyberries grow as sturdy, multi-stemmed shrubs that reach about 1.5 to 2 meters in height.

• Harvesting: Harvest in late spring or early summer when the berries are deep blue all the way through. If the inside is still green, they aren’t ripe yet! Birds love them, so you might need netting.
