Sour cherries, also known as tart cherries, are hardy deciduous trees prized for their bright red, acidic fruit. They are the go-to choice for baking, jams, and juices because their flavor intensifies when cooked. These trees are generally smaller and more cold-tolerant than sweet cherries, making them excellent for northern gardens.

Companion Planting:

Sour cherries grow well near chives, nasturtiums, and garlic, which help deter aphids and borers. Planting dandelion or clover nearby can attract essential pollinators early in the spring. Avoid planting near black walnut trees, as they produce chemicals that can be toxic to fruit trees.

Care Tips:

• Planting: Prefers full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Many varieties are self-fertile, meaning you only need one tree to get fruit.

• Watering: Provide deep watering during dry spells, especially while the fruit is developing to prevent shriveling.

• Support: Young trees should be staked for the first few years to ensure straight growth and wind resistance.

• Harvesting: Harvest when the fruit is fully red and detaches easily from the stem. They are best picked with the stems attached if not used immediately.
