Lovage (Levisticum officinale)
Lovage is a majestic, perennial herb that can grow up to two meters tall, making it a true centerpiece of the herb garden. Often called “Maggi herb” in Europe due to its savory, celery-like aroma, every part of the plant—leaves, stalks, and seeds—is edible. It is a hardy survivor that returns year after year, providing some of the earliest fresh greens in spring.
Companion Planting:
Lovage is a fantastic companion for potatoes and peppers, as it is believed to improve their health and flavor. Its small yellow flowers are a magnet for beneficial insects like parasitic wasps and hoverflies, which help control garden pests. Because of its massive size and deep taproot, avoid planting it near small, delicate herbs like thyme or oregano, which it might eventually shade out.
Care Tips:
-
Planting: Choose a permanent spot in full sun or partial shade with rich, moist, and well-drained soil. Give it plenty of room, as a single plant can grow quite wide.
-
Watering: Provide regular, deep watering, especially during dry summer spells. Lovage loves moisture and its large leaves will wilt quickly if the soil dries out completely.
-
Support: While the hollow stems are thick and sturdy, the plant can occasionally benefit from a large hoop or staking in very windy areas once it reaches its full height.
-
Harvesting: Harvest young, tender leaves throughout the season for the best flavor. For drying or freezing, harvest larger batches before the plant starts to flower in mid-summer.
Fun Fact: Lovage is so potent that a single plant is usually more than enough to supply an entire family (and their neighbors) for a whole year!
