Chaix Mullein

Chaix Mullein (Verbascum chaixii)

Chaix Mullein is a stately, drought-tolerant perennial known for its tall, slender flower spikes adorned with numerous small, yellow or white blossoms. Unlike common biennial mulleins, this species is a true perennial that returns year after year. Its silver-green, fuzzy foliage forms a low rosette, making it an elegant vertical accent for sun-drenched borders.

Companion Planting:

Chaix Mullein grows beautifully alongside lavender, salvia, and ornamental grasses. These plants share a love for dry, sunny conditions and lean soil. It is also a magnet for pollinators, especially bees and hoverflies. Avoid planting it near heavy-feeding vegetables or in overly damp areas where its roots might rot.

Care Tips:

• Planting: Choose a spot in full sun with well-drained, even poor or gravelly soil. It does not like “wet feet” during the winter.

• Watering: Once established, it is very drought-tolerant. Water sparingly; over-watering or over-fertilizing can cause the plant to become floppy.

• Support: The flower spikes are generally sturdy and upright, but in very windy locations, they may benefit from light staking.

• Harvesting: Deadheading (removing spent flower spikes) can encourage a second flush of blooms and prevents excessive self-seeding.

Fun Fact: The fuzzy leaves of the mullein family were once used as “nature’s bandages” and even as soft insoles in shoes to provide extra warmth and cushioning!
