Hemp (Cannabis sativa)
Cannabis sativa is a versatile, fast-growing plant that has been cultivated for thousands of years for its strong fibers, nutritious seeds, and medicinal properties. Known for its distinct palmate leaves, it is a hardy annual that can adapt to various climates. It is an exceptional “carbon sink,” absorbing more CO_2 than many trees.
Companion Planting:
Hemp grows well near alfalfa and clover, which provide nitrogen to the soil. It is also known as a “cleansing” plant because its dense growth naturally suppresses weeds and its roots can help break up compacted soil. Avoid planting near heavy-fruiting vegetables like tomatoes if space is limited, as hemp can quickly outgrow and shade them.
Care Tips:
-
Planting: Sow seeds in late spring when the soil is warm. It prefers well-drained, loamy soil with plenty of organic matter.
-
Watering: Requires moderate watering, especially during the first few weeks of growth. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
-
Support: Generally does not require staking as the stalks are naturally very strong and fibrous, designed to withstand wind.
-
Harvesting: For seeds, harvest when the seed heads are ripe and bird-resistant. For fiber, the stalks are harvested shortly after the plant flowers but before seeds develop.
Fun Fact: Hemp fiber is so incredibly strong and durable that it was used for centuries to make sails and ropes for the world’s greatest navies!
