Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa)

Tomatilloes, also known as Mexican husk tomatoes, are unique, sun-loving plants that produce tart, firm fruits inside papery husks. While they look like small green tomatoes, they have a brighter, citrusy flavor and a denser texture. They are the essential ingredient in authentic Salsa Verde and are rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants.

Companion Planting:

Tomatilloes grow well near peppers, onions, and basil. They share similar growing needs with tomatoes but are generally more resistant to common garden pests. Avoid planting them near corn or kohlrabi, as they may compete for the same nutrients or attract similar pests.

Important Note: You must plant at least two tomatillo plants near each other to ensure cross-pollination; otherwise, the husks will remain empty!

Care Tips:

• Planting: Plant in full sun after the danger of frost has passed. They prefer well-drained, fertile soil.

• Watering: Provide consistent watering at the base of the plant to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

• Support: Use tomato cages or stakes to support the sprawling branches as the fruit develops and becomes heavy.

• Harvesting: Harvest when the fruit fills out the papery husk and the husk begins to split or turn slightly brown. The fruit should still be firm and bright green.

Fun Fact: Despite their name and appearance, tomatilloes are more closely related to ground cherries and cape gooseberries than to actual tomatoes!
